About this data

Annual Population Survey

Visualisations of Unemployment and Economic Inactivity are driven by data from the ONS Annual Population Survey, published by the Office for National Statistics. Specific links to the data sets used are provided below. The hexmaps include the most recent labour market data on unemployment rate at 2010 parliamentary consituency.

Unemployment figures represent the proportion of people who are looking for work out of those who are economically active. Unemployment is defined by the ONS as individuals who have been actively seeking work in the last four weeks and are available to start work in the next two weeks. See the Glossary for more definitions.

As the APS data is a survey, there are often surpressed values which fail to meet statistical significance tests due to small or disclosive sample sizes. To address this, we have attempted to provide a composite view combining available data from the most recent 9 releases of the data. Consequently, the values shown could date from March 2022 to March 2024.

The page will be updated when ONS publishes new data at this geography, expected 17th October.

Claimant counts

Claimant count is the number of people claiming Universal Credit and Job Seekers' Allowance, broken down by age group. Rate is calculated against population estimates per constituency. This data reflects the actual claimant figures and is not collected through a survey. It can therefore be used as a proxy for inferring regions with low household income.

Census

Visualisations of 'Unemployed' and 'Economically inactive' (excluding students) are driven by data from the Census, published by the Office of National Statistics in 2021. 'Unemployed or Economically Inactive (excluding students)' is calculated by adding together unemployment and economically inactive values to come up with a NEET-like figure. Rates were calculated against Total values from the raw data.
